Programs

  • Arts In Our Schools features visual and performing arts performances by local Davis students.  Past seasons have included performances by students at all academic levels: elementary orchestra, junior high choirs, concert and jazz bands, and orchestras, and high school concert, symphonic and jazz bands, symphony orchestra, and singing groups including the Madrigals, Jazz Choir and other high school level choral groups.

    In addition performances by the High School Drama Department are included along with independent summer camp performances attended by Davis students.

    Arts in Our Schools airs Saturdays from 4-6pm, Sundays from 4-8 pm and Mondays from 6-8 pm.

  • Authors and Poets Speak features, among other offerings, the Meet the Authors series from the Fairfax Network presenting interviews with contemporary leading children's authors.  The Fairfax Network creates programming for educators to use in the classroom, and for public television stations and cable systems.

    In addition, the series features talks by, interviews with and documentaries about leading literary figures.  The series also draws content from the Lannan Foundation and the Center for International Education.  The Lannan Foundation is a family foundation dedicated to cultural freedom, diversity and creativity through projects which support exceptional contemporary artists and writers, as well as inspired Native activists in rural indigenous communities.  The Center for International Education is a Minnesota based non-profit foundation that produces documentaries featuring poets and writers with origins in the mid-west but with world-wide reputations.

    Authors and Poets Speak programming airs Mondays at 7 pm.

  • California Arts is a Channel 17 exclusive series highlighting the visual and performing arts from local artists and statewide trends in the arts. In partnership with the Natsoulas Gallery artists and exhibitions are featured and annual events such as the Beat Generation and Beyond Conferences and the California Conferences for the Advancement of Ceramic Arts are highlighted.

    In addition, a series of shows on early California impressionist art and recent diverse trends in cultural performing arts from the Anson Ford Theatre are presented.

    When available, California Arts programming airs at varying times on Thursdays between 4-8pm.

  • Launched in 1994, Classic Arts Showcase is a free cable television program designed to bring the classic arts experience to the largest audience possible by providing video clips of the arts in hopes that we may tempt you, the viewer, to go out and feast from the buffet of arts available in your community.

    The spectrum of classic arts disciplines aired on Classic Arts Showcase includes video samplings of animation, architectural art, ballet, chamber and choral music, dance, folk art, museum art, musical theater, opera, orchestral, recital, solo instrumental, solo vocal, and theatrical performances, as well as classic film and archival documentaries.

  • Deutsche Welle TV is public broadcasting from an international perspective.  Originating from studios in Berlin and Brussels, the DW-TV news and public affairs departments cover current events throughout the world. 

    In addition, arts, business, cultural and technological aspects of European life are presented in a series of magazine format programs.  The first half of each hour segment presents Journal, which features late breaking international news and an in-depth report of a current news story while the second half of the segment features a magazine style show on various topics.

  • The various PTAs of the DJUSD sponsor Education Nights.  Guest speakers and educators help to explain and clarify issues relevant to our students, as well as offer advice on various topics of concern to all.

    Not all of these presentations are available on Channel 17, but when guests are willing and a PTA desires it, the events are recorded and aired on Channel 17, as well as offered as video-on-demand. (See Tab Menu above).

  • To help parents understand the No Child Left Behind Act.  and all the important changes it brought, the U.S. Department of Education launched a new monthly television series entitled Education News Parents Can Use.

    The program features a live format, viewer call-ins, and lively discussion.  What is different about Education News is its focus on information and resources of value to parents and families.  The program features brief segments, including one-on-one interviews, "how-to" demonstrations, more video and graphics, and brief conversations with parents, educators, community, business and religious leaders, and education experts.

  • France Feelings is a bimonthly series on current events, travel, cuisine and contemporary life in France. An entertaining and informative look at different aspects of French life, France Feelings offers a brief overview of topical politics, trends in fashion and entertainment, as well as movie and music reviews. The last half of the shows usually highlights a geographical area or event in greater detail.

    France Feelings is a production of Audiovisual Cultural Services of the French Consulate General.

  • Friday Night Student Flix features locally produced student cinema, film festivals, awards and lectures by professional digital media creators.  Many programs are courtesy of the Sacramento base Tower of Youth organization.  In addition, a number of films have been submitted for airing from students as far away as Michigan, Maine and Georgia.

  • Channel 17 records the five high school graduation ceremonies and replays them a number of times. The replay schedule will be posted before the ceremonies.

  • Davis Joint Unified School District Sports

    Channel 17 presents select DJUSD sports games.  Games are taped by student interns under the guidance of Davis Media Access staff and volunteers.

    Recorded games are cablecast Saturday and Wednesday at 6pm (and sometimes Thursday), usually two weeks after the game to allow time for editing.  When out of season, we sometimes present classic games from our library.

  • The Howard Hughes Medical Institute is a philanthropy that supports biomedical research and science education. As part of its mission to strengthen science education, the Institute presents the Holiday Lectures on Science—an annual series that brings the latest developments in a rapidly moving field of research to an audience of high school students.

    During each lecture, the scientists answer questions from the students watching the talks. The videotapes also contain autobiographies of the lecturers, who discuss why they chose careers in science and what they enjoy most about their work.

    The hour-long series airs every Tuesday at 5 pm.

  • The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, in cooperation with the Prince William Network, offers arts-based educational programming free to teachers and students across the country through the Performing Arts Series. Programs feature artists and companies who perform at the Kennedy Center and explore the areas of music, dance, theater, and literature.

    The series airs on Tuesdays at 6pm on Channel 17.

  • NASA Educational Television is designed to bring math and science presentations to the K-12 audience.  The shows are upbeat and engaging
    and stress critical thinking skills.  Programs will sometimes feature interviews with engineers and scientists.  Since educational programming shares this channel with NASA public relations programming, regularly scheduled educational programming will be preempted by NASA administrators to show events such as briefings, congressional hearings and managed news feeds.

  • The National Gallery of Art provides a series of programs intended to foster awareness of the visual arts and make Gallery collections accessible to a broad audience beyond the Gallery's walls.

    The programs meet national standards in the visual arts for kindergarten through grade 12. A variety of artists, subjects, techniques, and styles are examined. Many programs are designed to stimulate discussion of the art and artists, of cultural and historical issues.

    This show is on hiatus.

  • Project Oceanography was designed as a live television program for middle school science students.  You can learn about a variety of ocean science topics.  Programs were taught by real scientists and featured a call-in question and answer session at the end of each lesson.

    DJUSD.tv occasionally airs episodes from this series Wednesday nights at 4pm.

  • The Road to Recovery is a series of webcasts and videos produced throughout the year to celebrate Recovery Month.  The program highlights the societal benefits of substance abuse treatment, lauds the contributions of treatment providers and promotes the message that recovery from substance abuse in all its forms is possible.  The program is produced by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

    Hour long episodes of Road to Recovery occasionally air at 4pm on Thursdays.

  • Prince William Network Satellite Field Trips take students on location to places many will never have the opportunity to visit.  These electronic excursions are structured so that both educators and students benefit from the experience.  Locations include wetlands, watershed and shorebird habitats.  In addition, native American and early European settlers archeological sites are explored.  Other shows highlight dinosaur sites,plate tectonics and meteorology.  Experience the world without leaving the classroom by taking one of PWN's award-winning Satellite Field Trips.

    Field trips, documentaries and presentations from the Fairfax Network are also
    featured.  In addition, programs highlighting world cultures, religions,
    peace, justice and youth issues are presented.

    Shows occasionally air on Thursdays at 4 pm.

  • School Board Meetings are cablecast live on Channel 17, usually at 7 pm on the first and third Thursdays of the month, and are rerun at 9 am and 7 pm on the Friday, and 1 pm on the Sunday, following the meetings.  Video streams are made available here after the meetings have aired on Channel 17.  Cablecast of and Internet access to the meetings is made possible through the services and facilities of the City of Davis and Government Access Cable Channel 16.

  • Students and Administrators talk about issues of the day for Davis Joint Unified School District.

    School Climate Spotlight is a series produced by DJUSD School Climate Coordinator Mel Lewis in which a panel of students asks questions of administrators and school board trustees.  The initial episodes, which appeared during the 2006-2007 school year were co-produced by Educational Access Cable Channel 17.  The 2007-2008 episodes were co-produced by DMA.

  • UCTV provides the public with informational, educational and enrichment programming that draws upon the vast intellectual, scientific and creative talents of the University of California.  UCTV delivers documentaries, faculty lectures, cutting-edge research symposiums and artistic performances from each of the ten UC campuses.

  • Channel 17 presents programs highlighting students and their programs in the DJUSD Visual and Performing Arts (VAPA) classes.  The shows are locally produced and co-hosted by Bob Gonzalez, recently retired music instructor, and Davis Enterprise reporter Jeff Hudson.  Dance, Drama, Music, and the Visual Arts classes will present performances, projects, and an inside look into what students are doing in the arts in the Davis school district.  Instructors and students will talk about experiences in their VAPA classes.

    Also featured is a show highlighting InnerSpark, the California State Summer School for the Arts with director Rob Jaffe and the Sierra North Arts Project (SNAP), a part of The California Arts Project at the Cress Center at UC Davis, with teacher staff development director Sara Anderberg.

    VAPA TV is currently in hiatus.
